The Bradford Cyrenians
Re-Start Project (RSP) first opened in February 2009 as a pilot project.
The service bypasses the traditional hostel route for men with a history of
rough sleeping and offers them a chance to move directly from the street
into their own self-contained accommodation which also offers a high
level support package.
This new approach is aimed at reducing the revolving door cycle of
men rough sleeping in between stays in hostels.
Bradford Cyrenians works in partnership with Yorkshire Housing who
provide 8 bed-sits, which are dispersed around the Manningham area of
Bradford. The bed-sits are furnished to a high standard by Bradford
Cyrenians and we also employ a dedicated worker who offers tenancy
support to clients in their own homes, often meeting two to three times a
week.
The aim of the RSP service is to provide an intensive support
package, looking at the holistic issues and engaging key partners to work
together with us in meeting the client’s needs. We work closely with the Bridge Project (drug support),
Bradford Day Shelter, Bevan House (Primary Health Care for homeless
people) and the Piccadilly Project (Alchohol service) who have all signed
up to joint working protocols to enhance the support package that is
delivered.
When the tenants have lived in their flats for 10
months they are assessed by Yorkshire Housing. If they are considered to be ‘tenancy ready’ then at month
12, support from Bradford Cyrenians is withdrawn and they continue to
live in their tenancies indefinitely as general needs tenants of
Yorkshire Housing. The incentive
is for tenants to maintain their tenancy and access support and this will
lead to a full tenancy, offering more long-term stability, rather than
moving from one property to another.
We have an agreement with the floating support worker from the
Assisi Centre who will provide ongoing support for a period after they become
tenants of the Housing Association.
This way they are not left to ‘fend for themselves’ but will be
supported right up to them being confident to take on the tenancy
independently.
